Democrats urge Rep. Peters to run for U.S. Senate

Democratic Sen. Carl Levin is retiring, and 54 Democratic state legislators signed a letter Monday encouraging Peters to run. The former state senator and lottery commissioner from Bloomfield Township is expected to enter the race soon and run unopposed in next year's Democratic primary.

A number of Republicans are considering whether to run, but no one has jumped in on that side, either.

Democratic lawmakers say the "battle-tested" Peters has won tough elections before. They say he's an "exceptional candidate" to fill the void when Levin leaves in 20 months.

U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow told Democrats at a weekend fundraiser that Peters "looks like a senator."
