Audit reveals care issues at Home for Veterans

AP Wire • Jul 21, 2015 at 12:33 PM

A report by the state auditor general says the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans failed to provide an on-site psychiatrist since August 2011 for residents with mental health disorders.

The performance audit was conducted last year.

It also says the home lacked controls to safeguard food and medical supplies. It says the home was "moderately effective" in controlling and safeguarding its pharmaceutical inventories.

There were about 430 people receiving nursing care at the facility in September 2012. The home is operated by the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs.

State law requires the facility to develop and submit a plan to comply with the audit's recommendations within 60 days.
