The planned Grand River Greenway Trail is a paved, multi-use route that would connect the Grand Rapids area to Grand Haven.
“We have some park millage funds designated for this, but we need more funding from private donors, grants and local units of government,” Ottawa County Parks Director John Scholtz said.
According to recent reports from the Ottawa County Parks Department, the estimated cost to complete the Greenway is about $15 million. About $6 million of that is needed from private sector contributions.
“We have been working quietly on the private fundraising and also communicating with local units,” Scholtz said. “We have a lot more work to do before we have funding in place.”
Scholtz noted that at some point, the county might have a public fundraising drive.
The trail, once it is completed, would join a network of trails in the region that promote walkability and recreation in the natural environment.
One of the latest trails in the network is in Spring Lake.
