The ferry's owner estimates the ship will save 300 highway miles for the semitrailers, which get about 5 miles per gallon of gas.
Broadwind Towers & Heavy Industries is manufacturing the turbines in Manitowoc, Wis., for a development near Saginaw and Bay City. Four sections for each of the 330-foot towers are bolted together in the field, usually with the help of Manitowoc Company cranes.
Lake Michigan Carferry Service executive Pat McCarthy said that up to four wind tower truckloads can be shipped on each crossing. McCarthy said the Badger can handle 2,000 tons of cargo.
The shipments are expected to continue through late July or early August.
