When your mother suffers

Van Allsburg, who now lives in North Carolina, weaves in and out from his childhood home in Grand Haven Township to the present, retelling how he, as a teenager, came to grips with his mom's mystifying accident.

In the now, he visits his mother at a Grand Haven nursing home.

"She's in a wheelchair, and has only one leg," he wrote. "Her brain is damaged, she has diabetes insipidus, and suffers with bipolar as well. ... But it was the accident when she was 40 which served as the progenitor of her demise."

Later, Van Allsburg admits that his mother's faith leaves him "numb and speechless. It's not a bad kind of numb, but a good kind."
