Before the storm: Fun for families

More than 1,000 people ate hot dogs, feasted on free ice cream and popcorn, and roamed Mill Point Park for fun and games.

“I'm ever-so thrilled we got the weather we got,” festival committee President Rick Homan said prior to Wednesday's brief downpour. “It was threatening rain all day long.”

Homan said the festival's first-ever Chalk the Walk event on Wednesday was a huge success. Youngsters drew images and wrote their names on the bike path that runs through the park.

Ryan and Jill Kelly's kids were chalking it up. The Crockery Township family attends the festival's family night every year.

“When I announced in the car today that we would be coming here, they were all super excited,” Jill Kelly said.

Mitzi Milanowski of Spring Lake Township watched her grandson, Clayton, scale the inflatable rock wall. Milanowski had four of her grandchildren from Holland spend the night so they could attend Family Fun Night.

“I think it's awesome,” she said. “We come every year. This is a great way to celebrate our heritage and almost everything is free.”
