World Wonders meet Michigan

The 173 acres of duneland along Lake Michigan in Saugatuck Township has a chance to become the Eighth Wonder of the World if it gets enough votes on the website virtualtourist.com.

People can vote once per day through Sept. 30.

The Saugatuck Douglas Convention and Visitors Bureau collaborated with VirtualTourist.com on the nomination, according to Felicia Fairchild, executive director of the visitors bureau.

“We selected the Saugatuck Harbor Natural Area because the National Trust for Historic Preservation designated it one of the 11 most endangered places in the world,” she said. “We felt those qualifications merited a nomination.”

The National Historic Trust highlighted the property in 2010 because of the threat from development. The trust cited the area’s striking beauty, beach, dunes, woods, wetlands, endangered species and history, including the buried town of Singapore.
