County weighs options for Road Commission

A special panel has presented its Road Commission Task Force Report to county leaders, and the Board of Commissioners will vote on the three options proposed in it on Aug. 13.

“The task force report shows that the Ottawa County Road Commission does a great job of maintaining roads," County Administrator Al Vanderberg said. "They can do a better job of reigning in their benefit and legacy costs."

According to Vanderberg, the decision is an important one that needs to be studied carefully before a final decision is made.

“The decision is not to be taken lightly,” he said. “It needs to be one that allocates the most financial resources toward the roads.”

Based on the report, the Road Commission’s future is:

— maintain the status quo,

— dissolve the Road Commission and transfer its duties to the Board of Commissioners,

— preserve the Road Commission with a memorandum of understanding that advises the commission to perform certain tasks laid out in the task force report.

County officials encourage residents to comment on the Road Commission and Public Utilities Task Force Report online at miottawa.org. The public can also comment at the Board of Commissioners meeting at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 13 at the Fillmore Street Complex.
