Planning the township's future

The Township Board recently approved a $19,000 sewer study for the M-45/120th Avenue commercial-industrial corridor, related to the M-231 project, but township taxpayers are getting a lift in financing it.

Northland Farms LLC officials agreed to pay for the study to be performed by the Grand Rapids-based Prein & Newhof engineering firm. Northland Farms owners Chuck Morgan and Rich Bramer said they would hope to be reimbursed as other companies tap in.

“I'd like to help with the study and do some financing,” Morgan told the board at a special meeting last week. “We don't expect anything in return, but time is of the essence.”

The company would fund its own sewer study if they did not join forces with the township, according to Bramer, who said there has been commercial interest in the wholesale nursery acreage at the southwest corner of M-45 and 120th Avenue for at least 10 years.

“I can't reveal some of that stuff,” he said. “Nobody specific, but there is interest from several different types of things.”

Bramer said the plan would be for Northland Farms to scale back from 350 acres to a 200-acre operation.

Bramer said water is currently available, but the sewer extension question would need to be settled before commercial parties would have solid interest in purchasing the land.
