State senator won't challenge GR-area congressman

Mark Jansen of Kent County's Gaines Township said people have "strongly encouraged" him to run for the seat over the past two years. But he said he's decided to focus on helping Michigan's economic recovery as a state legislator.

Amash is a libertarian-leaning conservative who has gained a bigger profile from battles with House Republican leadership and his stand against the collection of Americans' phone records. But he's upset some business leaders in his West Michigan district who say they want more pragmatic representation.

Investment adviser Brian Ellis announced Oct. 8 that he intends to challenge Amash in the Republican primary.
