SLT making waterfront purchase

The Spring Lake Township Board has agreed to purchase a 5-acre waterfront parcel west of Leonard Road, just south of the Lloyd’s Bayou bridge, commonly known as the Bottema property.

The land deal is for $45,000 and closing on the transaction is expected by the end of March.

The township plans to preserve the land for a public “viewscape” and possibly use it for “passive recreation” in the future.

The township previously purchased the Glafke waterfront property immediately north of the Bottema site and the Pellegrom property along the Grand River across from the River Run neighborhood.

The road frontage of the parcels is as follows:

*Glafke: 822 feet

*Pellegrom: 954 feet

*Bottema: 752 feet

“I think it’s a great idea to add onto what we already own there, and to protect it for our future generations and to keep that scenic vista open,” said Township Community Development Director Lukas Hill. “On top of that, it’s not the best place to develop anyway.”

Marvin Bottema was the last owner of the parcel. He died a year ago.

His son, John Bottema, said he believes his family has owned land since the 1800s. His great-great-grandfather built the home across the street.

“The township is paying us what fair market value would be,” John Bottema said. “I’m happy I’m still going to have access to it.”

Township Manager Gordon Gallagher said he’s thrilled with the opportunity.
