Twp. Board forgoes salary hike

“I thought it was a good thing for them to do,” Township Supervisor John Nash said. “It shows we’re fiscally responsible.”

The board is responsible for setting salaries each year, but those must be approved at the annual meeting of the electors, which is scheduled for 6 p.m. March 24 at the Township Hall.

Trustee Larry Mierle said the board is pursuing a new township hall and fire barn, so he doesn’t think it is appropriate to raise any board member’s pay because of possible public perception.

“We’re looking at hopefully building a building,” Mierle said. “Do we want that hanging over our heads that the trustees got a raise? And that will come up.”

Two years ago, the board voted to increase trustee pay from $3,000 to $4,000 a year, and residents concurred.

Township Clerk Carolyn Boersma expressed interest in raising the supervisor’s statutory pay from $15,600, but the board decided last week to keep it status quo. Nash receives an additional $12,600 for his non-statutory duties.

“The supervisor’s salary is way too low,” said Boersma, who was the only one to vote against keeping the supervisor pay the same.

Boersma makes $30,000 for her statutory duties and another $27,200 for extra duties not ordinarily part of a clerk’s job.

Treasurer Jim Koster’s salary will remain at $12,000.
