$1M settlement for ex-city clerk in tax flap

The agreement with Jenifer French was announced Wednesday. She will be reinstated as clerk, but will immediately resign. She'll get about $900,000 and the city will pay $109,000 into the retirement system.
The Michigan appeals court in 2013 said a judge wrongly threw out an arbitrator's decision that was in French's favor. The ruling meant that she could be reinstated with back pay and benefits that were worth $90,000 a year when she was fired in 2006.
French, who was appointed city clerk in 2000, maintained that she didn't intentionally deceive the city.
