Grand sand creations

People walking along the water’s edge pointed at the castle growing out of the Summer Solstice, but giant mosquitoes got their attention, and the Peoples Choice Award.

Dudes and Dudettes constructed the mammoth arm stretching across the beach, complete with the largest mosquito ever seen, with another mosquito buddy nearby.

“Mosquitoes Suck,” was the name of the creation. This was something everyone could relate to after a cool and very wet spring.

The sculpture most likely to make everyone feel itchy, also won first place in the Crew’s Category (8-15 participants of all ages).

The North Ottawa Community Health System award went to the Schamback Family for their sculpture, “NOCH-A-Sketch.”

NOCH employee Lori Schamback said four groups from the hospital were participating as a preliminary activity for the company picnic being held just down the beach.

“All of us are first-timers,” she said. “We just looked at pictures online to see what people had done previous years and realized we were over our heads.”

Schamback said their Etch-A-Sketch contained a heart “because North Ottawa is at the heart of the community.”

The other sponsor award from Chemical Bank went to the Chemical Bank team for their sculpture, “Sea’once.”

Eric and Sara Rooks of Holland, along with their children, Chloe, 8 and Leo, 7, bustled around the beginnings of their sculpture.

“I’ve never done it before, but I did a little reading on some techniques,” Eric said as he manned the shovel and orchestrated where his wife, Sara – another NOCH employee – poured large buckets of water retrieved from Lake Michigan.

Nearby a group of Allegan residents belted out “99 Buckets of Sand on the Wall,” while working on their creation.

Sculptors worked from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. during the event hosted by The Chamber, Grand Haven, Spring Lake, Ferrysburg, when local celebrity judges checked their work.

The group of spectators continued to grow and the State Park parking lot filled to the maximum as area residents realized this really was going to be a great day at the beach.
