A November audit detailed the district's then-$10.4 million deficit for the 2013-14 budget year and updated numbers were released Thursday.
Chief Financial Officer Richard L. Carpenter's team found the additional deficit and said it appears that some problems identified in past years were still taking place.
School board President Isaiah Oliver said the deficit is "devastating," but "we have to take ownership of it."
Following the new numbers, the district has until July 31 to submit an updated deficit elimination plan to the Michigan Department of Education. On Thursday, officials outlined the 2014-15 budget — including a surplus of $3.8 million that would be used to pay down the deficit.
