Helping hands

Bill Haynes was at the point of putting buckets under the leaking roof of his Ferrysburg home, because all of his money was going to make ends meet, he said. His wife, Nancy, died in 2010, following a long illness.

“With medical expenses, and going from double income to single income, that pretty much took all of it,” he said.

Haynes was watching his childhood home on West Spring Lake Road start to fall apart on him.

“I needed help,” he said. “My friends got together and said, ‘We’re going to help you.’”

Haynes said he was too proud to accept help at first, but prayed on it and finally agreed.

The American Legion Riders hosted a fundraiser to pay for materials and West Michigan Roofing donated some of the labor, said Garrett Veihl, another American Legion member.

Veihl stopped by early Tuesday morning to drop off food and drinks to the workers stripping the roof.

“It will all get done today,” he said.

Haynes said getting the roof done was a big relief.

“It’s the Legion’s mission to help families,” Veihl said.
