Charter customers get ready

There was no line when Diane Losee stopped in to stock up on set-top boxes, which will be required to receive programming after next week's switch.
“I was embarrassed to say I have six TVs,” the Spring Lake Township woman said. “I don't know if I really understand (the switch), but I know I'll be getting more channels. When I turn on my TV on July 22, I will check it out.”
The lineup will build to more than 200, according to Charter representatives. And Internet speed will double.
But there's still a cost associated with the changes. Set-top boxes are free for the first year (longer in some cases) — but after that, each one will cost $6.99 per month.
Losee said her family may have to cut back on the number of televisions next year after calculating the extra $40 per month after the first year.
Losee left the Charter store with a bag full of set-top boxes, cables and remotes.
“I'll just be trying to figure out how to hook up all this stuff,” she said.
Store associate Tanya McDonald said most customers have been cooperative and she hasn't heard about too many subscribers jumping ship.
Bill Morand, Charter's regional communications director, said the company has gained customers in some areas because the set-top box requirement also cuts down on unauthorized use.
Kris Riera picked up her set-top boxes Wednesday for her homes in Grand Haven and Spring Lake.
“I think this is a way for them to make more money,” she said. “I think it goes with the times we're in. Do I want to pay it? No.”
