Trevor Howard, who would have been a third grader at Ferry Elementary next week, died Sunday at Devos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapid from complications of leukemia.

“He never stopped telling us he loved us, no matter how icky he felt,” said his mom, Stacy Emmert. “He was like an angel from heaven.”

Trevor took his last breath at 2:55 p.m. as his grandfather read him a story about going to heaven.

“He kept talking about how he couldn't wait for school to start,” Stacy said. “He said when he got out of the hospital, he wanted to go to Legoland. We didn't want to tell him he was going to die. We just told him Jesus loved him very much and was going to take good care of him... that he was going to be in good hands.”

Stacy said Trevor was touched by the candlelight vigil that Grand Haven community members organized for him on Aug. 15 at Ferry Elementary.

He loved his friends, his school and his community.

“The vigil was beautiful,” Stacy said. “He loved it. When his teachers spoke it made him tear up. Even like yesterday he said, 'I can't wait for school to start.' It just broke my heart. That boy loves his school so much and all of his friends.”
