The 2014 Labor Day Bridge Walk will take place at 9 a.m. Monday, Sept. 1, at the north side of the Third Street bridge. This is part of the Labor Day Community Walks that are held throughout the state in conjunction with the Mackinac Bridge Labor Day Walk.

For more than 50 years, Michigan residents have gathered in St. Ignace for the Mackinac Bridge Labor Day Walk. However, not all Michigan residents are able to attend the Bridge Walk.

The City of Grand Haven is one of several Michigan communities holding a Labor Day walk. Officials believe the walk will be an important step toward helping its citizens lead healthier, more physically active lives.

“In addition to increasing physical activity and overall health among residents, there are many other advantages to hosting active community events,” says Marilyn Lieber, president and CEO of the Michigan Fitness Foundation. “Active communities also gain economic and environmental benefits along with enhanced community connections.”

DETROIT (AP) — AAA projects that more than 1.12 million people in Michigan are expected to travel during the Labor Day holiday period, up nearly 1 percent from last year.

The auto club says that of those more than 1 million people plan to travel by auto, while more than 43,000 will travel by air and over 79,000 travelers will go by rail, bus or boat. The travel forecast is for those planning to go 50 miles or more from home.

The Labor Day holiday travel period is defined as Thursday to Monday. Many schools in Michigan start classes after the holiday.

Good news for car travelers - the auto club says that gas prices are expected remain steady. The statewide average is relatively unchanged at about $3.51 per gallon. That's about 12 cents less than this time last year.

AAA Michigan says gas is the lowest price in the Detroit area at $3.47 per gallon and the highest average is in the Marquette area at $3.58 a gallon.
