Alfred was a public school teacher for well over 30 years and worked at the Grand Rapids Public Schools for the majority of that time, where he spearheaded all aspects of the Sidewalk Safety Patrol for Harrison Park Elementary School for many of those years. He was a strong advocate for safety and following the rules, and utilized this platform in order to promote that. He also enjoyed farming and spending time on his acreage in Holland (pre-1980) and Crockery Township (1978-2017). He enjoyed collecting things and was able to find a use for absolutely everything. In his retirement he served as a custodian at Nunica Bible Church.
