In fact, Western Michigan Christian’s boys basketball team is still alive and kicking. The Warriors will play in the Class C quarterfinals on Tuesday at Mount Pleasant High School. The three-time defending Class D state champions from WMC (17-6) will be underdogs against a Flint Beecher team that has lost just twice in 25 games.

Still, being the underdog hasn’t hurt the Warriors this postseason. They shocked undefeated and state-ranked Montague in the first round of districts, a win that jump-started their state tournament run.

A win on Tuesday would push WMC into the state semifinals on Thursday at 2:50 p.m. The Class C state championship game will be played on Saturday at noon.

While the Warriors are the last winter sports team still playing, several spring sports squads open their seasons this week.

Area track and field teams kick off competition at the Grand Valley State University Challenge. The boys head to GVSU on Wednesday while the girls’ competition is on Thursday.

The Buccaneers’ girls water polo squad hosts the Grand Haven Varsity Tournament on Friday and Saturday, while the Bucs’ girls tennis team is home against Fruitport on Wednesday, then hosts the Buc Spring Slam on Saturday.
