Lubbers Cup Regatta is Saturday

Competing teams include Michigan State University, University of Michigan, Brock University (Canada), Ohio State University, University of Virginia, U.S. Coast Guard Academy, Eastern Michigan University, Marquette University, Milwaukee School of Engineering, North Park University, University of Cincinnati and Wheaton College.

“The 16th annual Lubbers Cup Regatta promises to be the best one in the history of the event,” said John Bancheri, GVSU’s director of rowing and varsity men’s head coach.

The schedule of events begins at 8 a.m. The awards ceremony is at 3 p.m. The eight-person boats will be on the water from 10 a.m. until about noon, with the Men’s Varsity Eight Grand Final — the race for the Don Lubbers Cup — scheduled for 11:50 a.m. Four-person boats will start racing at 12:10 p.m.

The regatta is free and open to the public. Races can be viewed from the Spring Lake Yacht Club, 17500 W. Spring Lake Road. Parking is limited at this viewing location, so ride the shuttle service which will be picking up viewers from the Emmanuel Free Church Parking Lot, 17771 W. Spring Lake Road; and Water Tower Park, corner of VanWagoner and West Spring Lake roads, for a donation. The Harbor Transit shuttle will run from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
