“The varsity contest between Grand Haven and Portage is always an exciting one because our teams are well-matched,” Grand Haven coach Kim Vincent said.

“I’m happy to see the growth and development of individual players on this team.”

Junior Varsity: Grand Haven lost to Portage, 10-1, with Maria Hornby scoring the Bucs’ lone goal.

Grand Haven’s varsity boys lacrosse game at Holland Christian was called off due to the weather with nearly 15 minutes to play and the Bucs leading 8-5.

Freshman Bailey Mines was in the right place at the right time Tuesday afternoon and booted in the lone goal of the game to give host Western Michigan Christian a 1-0 victory over cross-town rival Muskegon Catholic.

The opening River Valley Conference victory was the second win in a row for the Lady Warriors (2-3).

With plenty of rain, near freezing temperatures and a stout wind, it was a typical hard-fought battle that has become the norm between these two rivals.

With 13:34 left in the game, freshman Kelly Hoffius played a ball across the front of the box where Mines tucked it neatly away for her first goal of the year. WMC outpaced MCC in shots on goal by a 7-2 advantage.

The Warriors face defending conference champion NorthPointe Christian at home Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
