The Pioneers’ Madie Morgan scored on a deflected shot that got past Haven keeper Faith Platz with 28 minutes, 44 seconds remaining in the game.

“Faith did an awesome job. She had four saves that were just phenomenal,” Damhuis said.

The Bucs were outshot 5-3 by the Pioneers, who are ranked No. 2 in Division 2.

Junior Varsity: Grand Haven suffered a 2-0 loss to East Grand Rapids on Friday.

LAKERS BLANKED BY MAROONS

Holland Christian scored a goal in each half, both off corner kicks, to score a 2-0 win over Spring Lake.

“We defended lot, and the wind was really a factor,” Lakers’ coach Jeremy Thelen said. “We had to defend with an extra player in the first half because of the wind. It opened up a bit in the second half, but we were really chasing. They’re big, physical. They’re ranked (No. 8) in the state.”

Thelen gave credit to Lakers’ goalie Molly Cooke and defenders Leeann Latsch, Kendall Meyers, Hailey Pellegrom and Katie Albright with playing well against a dangerous Maroons’ attack.

Junior Varsity: Makayla Boyink scored the game’s lone goal, giving Spring Lake a 1-0 win.
