Michael Zietlow pitched for the Lakers, allowing four hits and striking out nine batters.

In Game 2, the Lakers trailed early but bounced back for the win despite just five base hits.

With his team trailing by a run in the sixth inning, Spring Lake’s Cody Houts led off with a double, then scored thanks to some heads-up aggressive baserunning.

Later in the inning, Clauss singled, stole second and scored the winning run on Ryan Walling’s hit. Brian Chappell got the start for the Lakers, allowing eight hits and six runs over four innings. Logan Pellegrom threw two scoreless innings, then Nick Keller struck out the side in the seventh.

“They made a lot of errors, and we put the ball in play,” said Lakers’ coach Brian Sabo, whose team is 5-5 overall and 4-2 in league play. “We said to the kids when we were behind, ‘Do we want to be conference champs?’ And we really responded. I’m happy with the way we overcome some adversity.”

The Lakers host the Michael Bernard Memorial today. Spring Lake faces West Ottawa in the 10 a.m. opener. The second game features West Ottawa and St. Joseph, then Spring Lake takes on St. Joseph in the third and final game of the day.
