SL baseball stays in contention for Lakes 8 title

Nate Thompson • Jul 21, 2015 at 10:55 AM

With its victory, Spring Lake improves to 8-8 overall and 7-2 in the Lakes Eight, keeping the Lakers a game behind Tri-County. Fruitport falls to 12-8 and 5-3.

Fruitport was limited to just three hits by Keller, and the only time the Trojans’ offense found success was in the first inning, when they played small ball.

Fruitport had its first three batters of Kyle Vandygriff, Gene Archer and Cody Merkins reach safely on a passed ball on a third strike, an error on a bunt, and a bunt single. They scored twice on double steals, as Spring Lake was too late relaying its throws from second back to home.

“With those two quick runs, it would have been easy for a lot of teams to fall apart. But we made plays the rest of the way,” Sabo said.
