Kyle Vandygriff put the Trojans back on top for good in the 10th, as he doubled to deep left-center, and took advantage of a pair of passed balls to score the go-ahead run.
Fruitport’s Mike Ryan closed on the Packers in their last at-bats, earning the win after giving up only one hit in the final three innings.
Merkins was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle for Fruitport, while Zack Goldman finished 3-for-3 and Lance Gilbert also had two hits.
EAGLES PULL AWAY FROM BUCS
Hudsonville pulled away from host Grand Haven with four unearned runs in the fifth inning and three more runs in the sixth, securing a 9-2 victory over the Bucs on Thursday.
Grand Haven’s lone runs came in the bottom of the fifth, with one coming on an RBI double from Eric Martin. Jeff Stevens also singled twice for the Bucs, while Doug Zelenka and Will VerDuin each added singles.
Reid Weber threw a scoreless inning in the seventh for the Bucs, who fall to 11-10 overall and 6-6 in the O-K Red.
Grand Haven hosts West Ottawa on Monday.
BUCS’ SOCCER FALLS IN SHOOTOUT
Grand Haven’s varsity girls soccer team lost to Hudsonville in a shootout in the opening round of the O-K Red Conference tournament.
The Buccaneers, the fourth seed in the league tourney, scored twice in the first half against Hudsonville, but the fifth-seeded Eagles tied up the game with their second goal with just 1:50 remaining in the second half to force overtime.
Neither team scored in two extra sessions, so the teams advanced to a shootout, where the Eagles came out victorious.
SL SOFTBALL WINS SLUGFEST
Spring Lake and Montague piled up the runs in a non-conference battle on Thursday, with the Lakers prevailing in the slugfest, 17-13.
All 14 Spring Lake players recorded at least one hit, including the Lakers’ Italian exchange student, Manu Della Bosca.
Micanna Pelkey had a huge offenisve night for the Lakers with three hits — including an inside-the-park home run — and five runs scored. Cassie Appel added three hits, Emma Kendro had two triples and Rachael Adams contributed two doubles and four runs scored.
