Olle's late goal boosts Haven soccer

Olle scored the game-winning goal off a corner kick by teammate Lydia Weykamp with just five seconds remaining in the first of two 10-minute overtime periods, giving the host Buccaneers a 3-2 win over visiting West Ottawa in the fifth-place game of the O-K Red Conference tournament. In the process, the Bucs gained some much-needed momentum heading into next week’s Division 1 district tournament.

“The ball bounced off one West Ottawa player and I just one-timed it,” said Olle, whose shot went over the outstretched hands of West Ottawa goalie Ashley Kliphuis.

A Panthers’ defender tried to head the ball out of danger, but was unable to keep the ball from crossing the goal line.

“I was actually shocked it went in,” Olle admitted. “It felt really good to win this game. We needed something to raise us up. We’re ready for districts, and this  game definitely helped us.”
