WMC, rated No. 1 in Division 4, shot a 295 last week to win the district at Manistee while the Mustangs shot a 309 to win the district at Huckleberry Creek in Pewamo.

In addition to the Warriors, teams from Manistee Catholic Central, North Muskegon, Muskegon Catholic, Hesperia and Pentwater qualified for the regional.

NorthPointe Christian, Fowler, Pewamo-Westphalia, Portland St. Patrick, Lansing Christian and Bath also qualified for the regional.

Friday’s regional winners will move on to next week’s state finals at Grand Valley State University on Friday and Saturday.

St. John’s is located just north of Lansing.

Fans are allowed to walk along the side of the fairways to watch the competition. However, they are not allowed to talk with the competitors.

Another top-ranked team from the Lakeshore is Spring Lake, which sits at No. 1 in the Division 2 state rankings.

The Lakers will attempt to back up their ranking on Thursday in their regional competition at the Highland Golf Course in Grand Rapids.

Spring Lake fell flat in its district competition, shooting its worst team score of the season, but coach George Bitner knows his squad has the ability to go low and win the regional, which pairs the top six teams from both the Sparta and the Grand Rapids Christian districts.

“To me, it looks like we have a chance,” said Bitner, who listed Grand Rapids Christian and Zeeland East, along with Forest Hills Easter and Forest Hills Northern, as the Lakers’ top competition. “Five of the teams are ranked in the top 10 in the state, so it’s a fairly tough area to get out of.”

Grand Haven missed out on advancing out of the Division 1 district meet as a team, but a pair of individuals qualified for Thursday’s regional meet.

Senior Ben Lewis and sophomore Kevin Lacroix will represent the Buccaneers at the Division 1 regional meet at Rockford’s BraeSide Golf Club. Both shot rounds of 82 at the district meet.

Only the top three teams and the top three individuals not on a qualifying team move on from the regional event to the state meet.
