The MBVT is a regional event that attempts to draw participants from across the Midwest as well as from all corners of the continent.
“In our first event (held in Muskegon) we had teams from California, Ohio, Texas, New Jersey, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin,” VanderWerp said. “We’re working with the Canadian Volleyball Federation, so we have some Canadian teams coming in. We’re trying to broaden our scope.”
The tournament is part of a national points system so teams participating in MBVT events can earn points toward a season-ending Beach Championship Series. The top six players form the men’s and women’s pro division receive cash prizes, and the top man and women receive an expenses-paid trip, along with a partner, to play in the Barefoot Wine Championships in Miami.
“It’s a new thing this year and we’re glad to be a part of it,” VanderWerp said. “We hope to grow the players like we have with Stevo.”
Stevo VanderWerp is a Grand Haven native who has climbed into the top 50 national beach volleyball rankings. He plays with the U.S. National Beach team, and has represented his country in several international competitions.
Stevo VanderWerp will play with California’s Evan Engle in today’s event.
