Hickory sticks golf a part of SLCC’s centennial celebration

“The new balls of today wouldn’t work,” Lathwell said. “They’re too hard for the hickory clubs. There was no spin once they were hit off the tee.”

Beginning Friday, SLCC will offer a hickory stick couples twilight golf event, with a shotgun start at 5:30 p.m. The cost for SLCC members is $65 per couple, which includes the hickory stick rentral, dinner and prizes.

The hickory sticks will also be available for rounds on Saturday and Sunday for members. The cost is $25 per set or players can share with their partner for $12.50 each.

The rounds could stand as practice for the big event beginning Monday, SLCC’s HIckory Sticks Tournament. The tournament begins with a 9 a.m. shotgun start with flighted men’s and women’s divisions. The $45 entry fee for SLCC members includes hickory stick rental, snacks and beverages on the course, prizes and lunch.

Other centennial events throughout the day include a family fun day, which includes several activities for children including pony rides, face painting, sack races, and a watermelon eating contest. Adult activities include croquet, washers, a putting course and a vintage car display.

An historical group picture will be also be taken at 4 p.m., as SLCC will try to re-create the pose of a photo taken at the Grand Opening Party of the Clubhouse in 1926.
