Kids' triathlon a hit

Kramer was the first overall finisher at Saturday’s event with a time of 20 minutes, 48.8 seconds.

“I did it once before a few years ago and it was fun,” he said. “The swim went pretty good. I didn’t swim as fast as I could have, but I was still pretty far ahead.”

Kramer then raised some eyebrows as he cruised through the 2 1/4-mile bike course on a vintage Schwinn five-speed.

“I was riding an old Schwinn, and it was really fun," he said. "Although my shoe got caught on the pedal and it ripped off my shoelaces."

The teenager shrugged off the inconvenience, tightened his laces and pounded out 1 1/4-mile run.

Event organizer Ron Knoll was thrilled with the turn-out as well as the picture-perfect weather.

“It’s just a gorgeous day,” Knoll said. “It’s great, the parents are out here cheering not only for their own kids, but for all the kids. It’s great to see all these kids out here pursing a healthy lifestyle.”
