Veronica Constantine, the race director, said she was inspired to get involved by a personal experience when she had to undergo emergency brain surgery to manage hydrocephalus, which is a chronic condition in which excess fluid builds up in the brain. A shunt was put into place to relieve the pressure.

Constantine said it was a very traumatic experience and she made a promise to herself to help others who have been diagnosed with the same condition. Shunt research is still privately funded, she said.

Refreshments and commemorative T-shirts for the first 100 registrants will be provided. Registration forms are available at www.stars-kids.org or by contacting Constantine by e-mail at Brainyday5k@yahoo.com.

Late registration will be at 7 a.m. Saturday for $30. The event will take place rain or shine.
