Burning Questions

• Who will emerge as the Trojans’ starting quarterback?

Returning varsity letter winner Erik Johnson will try to hold off last season’s junior varsity starter, Tyler Fehler. “We feel we have two outstanding quarterbacks,” Fruitport coach Steve Wilson said. “I think it’s going to be a good battle between those two, with two good quarterbacks. We feel they can make each other better. We feel we’re going to be pretty good at that position.”

• Does Fruitport have enough playmakers on both sides of the ball to help the Trojans repeat as Lakes 8 champions and make some noise in the playoffs?

Fruitport ran into a dominating Zeeland East squad in their Div. 3 playoff opener and the final results were ugly. Fruitport can bounce back due to Mike Reyes, who will be one of the areas most experienced and talented running backs. He’ll need some help, however, from backfield contributors Logan Six and Zach Goldman. Defensively, Fruitport has some gaps to fill.  “We have a lot of kids that are going to be playing both ways,” Wilson said. “We’ve got a lot of positions open and we’ve got a lot of kids to take a look at during the next couple days of hitting so we can find out who our starters are.” A starting spot that is cemented is linebacker Matt Schucker, who consistently led the team in tackles a year ago.
