The Grand Haven-based Cougars drove deep into Wolverines’ territory and had one last opportunity to re-take the lead with 23 seconds left, but an unsportsmanlike penalty pushed them back and a go-ahead touchdown wasn’t in the cards.

Metro Detroit advances to Saturday’s title game against the Warren County (Mo.) Cyclones.

The Cougars, now in their fourth year of existence, had their most successful season to date this summer, completing a 10-0 regular season, then defeating Southeast Michigan (34-6) and Chicago (49-14) in the first two rounds of the playoffs.

Lakeshore averaged an impressive 45 points per game, which included one 2-0 score due to a forfeit. The Cougars’ defense allowed an average of just 10.6 points per contest.

The team is coached by Deirreio Duncan, who is also the team’s co-owner along with his wife, Tshaiva.
