SL swimmers salvage split at home tri-meet

The Lakers were running on empty after competing in another tri-meet on Tuesday at Zeeland and going through a demanding week of practice. Second, a handful of team members had a prior commitment for the call-back for the school play. Lastly, a greater focus on their minds was Saturday’s home invitational, where the Lakers will look to triumph against an eight-team field.

Even with those intangibles going against them, the Lakers nearly pulled off two wins on Wednesday, as they easily defeated Coastal Conference foe Fremont, 149-33, but was edged in the final tally by the co-op squad from Mona Shores, 96-89. The Sailors’ team also features swimmers from Reeths-Puffer and Western Michigan Christian.

“Oh yeah, Saturday definitely ranks in higher importance to us,” said first-year Lakers’ head coach Nikki Theune. “Even on Tuesday, we didn’t swim a lot of our girls in their normal events. Tonight, everyone swam their specialty, but it was a night where we were kind of feeling it out, to see what we need to work on and what we need to tweak for Saturday. But overall, I was pleased with the way everyone swam.”
