Tennis regionals: SL is state finals bound again

The Lakers’ lone flight championship came at No. 2 doubles, where sophomores Stuart Velarde and Harrison Palmer teamed up to defeat Petoskey in the finals, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (5).

The Lakers were runner-up at No. 1 singles, No. 1 doubles and No. 4 doubles.

Sophomore Ryan Fedewa reached the finals at first singles, but couldn’t keep up with the No. 1 seed, Petoskey’s Zach Fillips, falling 6-3, 6-3.

The Lakers’ outstanding No. 1 doubles team cruised to the finals, but the pair of seniors in Nic Parnell and Michael Hartliep came up short against Petoskey, losing 6-3, 6-2.

Spring Lake sophomores Brenden Peel and Josh Cole also reached the finals, where they lost in three sets to Petoskey, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.

Spring Lake’s Gabriel Guzman at No. 2 singles, Mitch Davis at No. 3 and Sean Dusterwinkle at No. 4 each earned two points for their team, as did Erik Johnson and Jonah Yoshonis at No. 3 doubles.

The Lakers will next compete in the Division 3 state finals at Holly/Grand Blanc on Oct. 14-15.


Grand Haven had a strong showing at Thursday’s Division 1 regional meet at Holland, placing third.

“This is fantastic for us considering what we had to do this year in regards to the number of new kinds on the varsity team,” coach Jeremy Case said.

West Ottawa scored 26 points to take first place, followed by Grandville with 16 points. The Buccaneers were third with 13 points, followed by Rockford (10), Holland (8), Hudsonville (8), Kalamazoo Central (7), Caledonia (5) and East Kentwood (2).

“We improved each time we competed, learnign valuable lessons along the way,” Case said. “Finishing 1-5 in O-K Red dual matches to finishing fourth at the O-K Red conference tournament and finishing third at the regional tournament. I am extremely proud of the way we ended our season.”
