Ryan Duff crossed the finish line in 16 minutes, 9 seconds, which was good for 10th overall. For his effort, he was named to the invitational’s “Dream Team,” as one of the top runners in all divisions at the race.

“Ryan recorded a 4:57 first mile and kept the leaders in check the entire race,” said Grand Haven coach John Tarr. “He showed that he’s one of the best runners in the state.”

Grand Haven coach Greg Russick said his team’s win last week over Rockford might have taken its toll on his squad, affecting their performance during Saturday’s Portage Invitational.

The Bucs managed a fifth-place finish with 142 points, but was well behind an outstanding Saline team that took first overall with 57. Fellow O-K Red Conference foe Hudsonville beat out the Bucs by nine points to take fourth.

“(On Wednesday) we placed eight girls before Rockford’s No. 2,” Russick said. “(Saturday) Rockford had their top two runners finish prior to any Buccaneer. I truly believe that race on Wednesday took a lot out of us.”
