WMC soccer in line to defend its Division 4 state title

The Warriors (19-4-1) move on to play at East Kentwood at 3 p.m. Saturday in the state final, but official word is expected this morning. They will face Allen Park Inter City Baptist, 1-0 overtime winner Wednesday night over Auburn Hills Oakland Christian.

Hackett ends its season at 22-4.

It will be the Warriors’ 13th appearance in the state final game since the MHSAA began the current state tournament format in the 1980s. Prior to that, WMC won several unsanctioned titles. Since the ‘80s, the Warriors have ended those 12 state finals appearances with six state championships and six runners-up trophies.

“I didn’t really talk about (playoffs) at the start of season,” WMC coach David Hulings said. “Tonight was the first time I talked about how it would be a shame to get this far and not go to the state finals.”
