Cross country: Buccaneer girls place third

“Considering we graduated three of our top five runners from last year’s team; had four girls in the finals who did not run last year;s final race; had two runners fighting illness and one with severe shin splints; this was an incredible team finish,” said Buccaneers’ coach Greg Russick.

The state meet was Russick’s final meet as the Buccaneers’ coach.

All seven of Grand Haven’s runners finished within a 59-second window, and five of them finished with season-best times.

Ryan Duff missed out on breaking his older brother Joe’s school record time of 15:32 by just 20 seconds, but still managed a personal best effort at Saturday’s Division 1 state finals.

Duff’s 14th place individual finish earned him All-State honors and helped the Bucs place 12th overall with 291 points. Highland Milford won the title with 128 points.

“This group of seniors has a lot to be proud of over the last four years,” said Grand Haven coach John Tarr. “They’ve had a combined dual meet record of 24-4, and in that span won a conference and regional championship in 2010, and qualified for the state meet two years in a row.”

Spring Lake junior Brittany Beeler placed 13th overall in the girls Division 2 race, which earned her All-State honors.

Beeler crossed the finish line in 18:32. She was beaten out by two seconds by Lakes Eight Conference rival Anna Kreslins of Fremont, who took 11th. Beeler had beaten Kreslins throughout the season at conference jamborees.
