3 questions: Fruitport girls basketball

Nate Thompson • Jul 21, 2015 at 11:14 AM

Here are three questions concerning the Trojans:

1. Can Fruitport duplicate the success of last season in which they turned in a rare winning record and swept rival Spring Lake?

There’s no reason why they cannot. Fruitport must replace its top scorer in guard Beka German, but the Trojans still return a strong nucleus of athletes, several of whom recently captured back-to-back state titles on the volleyball court.

2. Can the Trojans overcome a lack of a consistent scoring punch?

Fruitport may not have a player who will average in double figures in scoring this season, but with the Trojans’ swarming full-court press implemented by head coach Bob German, that really is their best offense. With players such as Lauren Hazekamp and Toni Parker leading the charge defensively, the Trojans will be able to create plenty of turnovers and turn those into easy buckets on the other end.

3. Who could be a breakout player for Fruitport this season?

German said 5-foot-9 guard Morgan Glover — a transfer from Muskegon Catholic Central — will get a lot of minutes and could provide a big boost for the Trojans. Also look for improvement from junior Debbie Pekel, who could develop into Fruitport’s best shooter.
