Golfers take advantage of balmy weather

According to course manager Lew Gorbach, around 36 golfers came out for a round on Friday, and that number nearly doubled on Monday, with almost 70 golfers taking advantage of the above-average temperatures.

“It’s real unusual for this time of year,” Gorbach said. “Normally, the course is closed, but we’ll let some walkers out. This week. I’ve been pulling some carts out, which is very unusual. After the ground freezes, we don’t want any carts out there.

“The last few weeks have been just like spring golf — actually better than spring golf," he continued. "It’s great for us. We had a terrible spring. Now we’re having a great fall and winter.”

West Ottawa Golf Course has also been reaping the benefits of the mild weather. According to club manager Joe Sruba, more than 100 golfers played rounds there on Monday.

“Normally, there’s snow on the ground by now," Sruba said. "I think back in 2005 there was a Christmas we were dry, and there were people out playing then.”

Sruba said that as long as the course is playable, it will be open to golfers.

“It’s been kind of nice — a little extra to pay the bills,” Sruba said.
