Bucs' ski opener pushed back

According to coach Tim Graham, the runs at Cannonsburg Ski Area in Grand Rapids aren’t ready for the wear and tear of the scheduled Giant Slalom Championships, which will instead be pushed back to Thursday.

That’s not all bad for the Buccaneers, who have managed to squeeze in only two practices this season.

“We got two practices in before Christmas break, but we have not been able to practice since then,” Graham said. “With the cold front that came in, they were able to make snow (at the Ski Bowl in Grand Haven) yesterday, so we’ll be practicing today.”

Cannonsburg had scheduled the Giant Slalom Championships for today and the Slalom Championships for Thursday. Graham said he’s sure the giant slalom event will get pushed to Thursday and the slalom race moved to later in the year.

“It’s just a lot easier on the hill when the snow conditions are mediocre to start with to hold the giant slalom,” he said. “With a slalom race, it’s very easy to dig ruts all the way to the dirt when kids are taking such sharp turns.

“You need a pretty solid base.”

Graham said both championships are charity races. The first raises funds for the Ronald McDonald House and the second is for Mary Free Bed’s efforts to provide helmets for bikers, skiers and snowboarders.
