The Trojans took a big step toward competing for a Lakes Eight title, as they also defeated Tri-County at the quad, 60-21.

“Anytime Fruitport and Spring Lake meet, whether it’s wrestling, volleyball, soccer, whatever, it’s bound to be intense,” Pastor said. “I was worried some of our kids were going to be a little too amped up and to be honest, we were a little bit. I tried to tell them that this was just another dual meet but it’s hard to keep the kids from getting overly excited.”

Pastor was pleased his squad got down to business as the match progressed, which was a nail-biter throughout.

“It came down to the last three matches and we knew we had to win two of them or get a pin to secure the win,” Pastor said.

Thankfully, Fruitport has Dakota Gordon on its squad, and all the 160-pounder does is pin opponents.

“He’s got 15-17 wins and there all by pins,” Pastor said. “His only loss is to a state-ranked kid from St. Johns.”

Gordon finished the evening at 2-0, along with Tommy Martinez (119), Kaeleb Evans (125), Alex Foster (130), David Vanbergen (135), and Collin Butler (145).

Spring Lake rebounded after its loss to Fruitport by defeating host Grant, 46-30.

“All in all, I didn’t think we wrestled bad, you have to give all the credit to Fruitport,” said Spring Lake coach Dan Robinson. “They cam out and fought for every point. We had some matches that we knew were going to be close and they pulled out those matches. We just have to keep improving at every weight class and have some guys decide if they are willing to push that extra bit they need to, to win those matches.”

Spring Lake had four wrestlers finish 2-0 during the evening, led by 189-pound standout Andrew Hissom. Harry Kriger, Jared Marod and Billy Belcher also went undefeated. Finishing 1-0 on the night was Gabe Giddings.

In junior varsity action, Kedrick VanVelzen, AJ Borughton and Derek Holmes went 1-0 for Spring Lake.

The Lakers travel to East Grand Rapids for a team tournament on Saturday.
