Local fishermen waiting for safe ice

AP Wire • Jul 21, 2015 at 11:19 AM

People should be sure to stay back away from open water, the DNR said in its weekly fishing report. Most of the lakes to the north have ice, but over the southern half of the Lower Peninsula, lakes still have little to no ice.

In West Michigan, there is no safe ice, according to Willis Kerridge of Fish On Bait & Tackle in Nunica.

Anglers are instead concentrating their efforts on the area bridges, including those over Bowman’s and Smith’s bayous.

“No safe ice yet,” Kerridge said. “After this weekend, if it get as cold as it’s supposed to, hopefully it can make some ice, freeze that snow, but it still won’t be great ice.”
