FRUITPORT BOYS DROP 8TH STRAIGHT
The short-handed Fruitport varsity boys basketball team couldn’t keep pace with visiting Newaygo on Friday evening.
The Lions jumped out to a 20-7 lead after the first quarter and led 40-13 at halftime, then coasted to a 58-28 victory over the host Trojans.
Aaron Veihl scored a season-high 17 points for Fruitport, which falls to 2-8 overall and 1-5 in Lakes Eight Conference games. Amilio Flores added six, but the rest of the team combined for just five points.
Fruitport will play the remainder of the season without its leading scorer, Mike Reyes, who suffered a knee injury two weeks ago.
Brad Wright hit five 3-pointers and scored a game-high 20 for the Lions (7-4, 3-2 Lakes Eight). Max Harrington added 10 points and Damien Longoria scored nine.
