Bucs' hockey back to winning ways

The Buccaneers outlasted East Grand Rapids on Friday, 5-3, before beating Reeths-Puffer, 3-1, on Saturday.

Chris Corgan scored twice for the Buccaneers (12-4, 5-3  O-K Tier I) during Friday’s win over EGR.

Nathan Schmidt, Asa Pellegrom and Austin Way also scored for the Bucs. Tom Zelenka had a pair of assists while Tyler Ploeg, Ian Hibbard, James Dyksterhouse, Will Verduin and Way each had single assists.

Austin Bremer, Jordan Stanford and Josh Keller scored for EGR, which held a 23-18 advantage in shots.

On Saturday, the Bucs fell behind 1-0, but stormed back for the win thanks to goals by Verduin, Tom Zelenka and Way.

Jordan Klaassen, Verduin and Tom Zelenka provided assists.

Mark Nalley made 20 saves for Grand Haven, which killed off a 5-on-3 penalty late in the game to secure the win.

The Bucs host Grand Rapids Catholic Central in a league showdown on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at The Edge Ice Arena in Holland.


The Grand Haven JV hockey club won a pair of games last weekend, improving to 8-2-1 on the year.

On Saturday, the Bucs came back from a 2-0 deficit to beat Lakeshore/St. Joseph, 4-2. Ryan Christiansen scored two goals, while Lucas VanHeest and Andrew LaFrance scored single goals. Spencer Paarlberg had two assists while Lucas VanHeest, Jared VanHeest and Brad VanHeest each had one.

Ryan Henning was in goal and made 15 saves on 17 shots.

On Sunday, the Bucs scored a 2-0 win over Grand Valley. Connor Priest and Christiansen scored Grand Haven’s goals, while Paarlberg and Cole Carlson provided assists.

Zac Hansen earned the win, stopping all 10 shots he faced.
