Bucs icers settle for tie in regular-season finale

Both teams fired off 36 shots on goal, and both keepers — Mark Nalley for the Bucs and Steven Longfellow for the Pioneers — made 36 saves.

Grand Haven finishes its regular season at 16-6-2 overall and 6-4-2 in O-K Tier I games.

Grand Haven’s Ian Hibbard opened the scoring with a first-period goal, assisted by Tom Zelenka and Rowan Daniels.

East Grand Rapids responded with three consecutive goals to lead 3-1 after the second period.

The Bucs stormed back with three straight goals of their own, all coming in the third period. Austin Way scored the first, assisted by Asa Pellegrom. Doug Zelenka scored the second, assisted by Tom Zelenka, then Tyler Ploeg scored the go-ahead goal unassisted.

EGR’s Josh Keller scored with 52 seconds remaining to tie the game and force overtime.

The Buccaneers move on to the state playoffs tonight with a 7 p.m. contest against Grand Rapids West Catholic. That contest takes place at L.C. Walker Arena in Muskegon.
