Area wrestlers excel at state finals

Winning for the Bucs were Camden Bertucci at 103 pounds, Dakota Juarez at 152, Connor Moynihan at 171, Dakota Smith at 189, and Garrett Kelly and Matt Mulcahy at 215.

Bertucci (43-3), a freshman wrestling at 103 pounds, scored a 9-6 win over Port Huron Northern’s Austin Thompson. That sets up today’s showdown with Rochester junior Justin Kim (35-1), who won his opening match, 9-2.

Juarez, a sophomore, won a 15-4 major decision over New Baltimore Anchor Bay’s John Yank, 15-4. The victory moves Juarez (36-6) into the quarterfinal round against Alec Mooradain (44-2) of Detroit Catholic Central.

Moynihan (44-2) pinned Jake Dobras of Novi in 1:11, advancing to the quarterfinals. Today he’ll meet Hartland’s Justin Charneski (43-13) in the 171-pound bracket.

The Buccaneers’ Smith won at 189 pounds, scoring a 7-4 decision over David Skochelak at Utica Ford. Smith (12-2), a senior, will meet North Farmington’s Kevin Miller today.

A pair of Bucs won at 215 pounds. Kelly (37-9), a senior, scored a 7-3 win over Daulton Arthur of Waterford Kettering. He moves on to meet Rochester Hills Sotney Creek’s Serge Andreou (32-5) today.

Mulcahy (30-16) won 4-2 over Hartland’s Brian Braun, 4-2. That set up a meeting with Temperance Beford’s Bryan Smith (41-1).

Coming up short in his opening match was senior Josh Juchartz (26-15), who was pinned by Davison’s Dominic Russ in 1:07 at 125 pounds. Juchartz will wrestle against Lincoln Park’s Jake Jones (46-8) today in the consolation bracket.

Also suffering a first-round loss was senior Allen Torres (38-9). He lost an 11-2 major decision to Rochester’s Kaelan Richards. Torres will meet Wyoming Roosevelt’s Quentin Santiago in the consolation bracket at 135 pounds.

Heavyweight Ian Radde (33-12) came up short in his match on Thursday as he lost 7-0 to Logan Rimmer of Temperance Bedford. Radde will meet North Farmington’s Majd Mokbel (36-12) today.


Three of Spring Lake’s four state meet qualifiers scored wins on Thursday.

Tyler Nietering (45-10) scored a default win over Tyler Daniel of St. Joseph in their match at 119 pounds.

Harry Kriger (45-9) won 11-8 over Jesse Smith of Warren Lincoln at 140 pounds, while Andrew Hissom (50-4) recorded an 11-3 major decision over Ryan Casey of Niles at 189 pounds.

The lone loser was heavyweight Billy Bencher (41-12). He suffered a 7-0 loss to Matt Smith of Ortonville Brandon.

Nietering will meet Ali Ayache of Dearborn Heights Crestwood (53-5) in today’s quarterfinals round. Kriger will face Travis Dragomer (43-5) of Stevensville Lakeshore today, while Hissom will wrestle against his old rival, Greenville’s Jordan Thomas (43-0). Thomas has handed Hissom all four of his losses this winter.


Fruitport’s lone entrant at the state meet, Tommy Martinez (40-12), suffered an 11-3 loss to Mason Cleaver of Holly at 125 pounds. Martinez will face off against Patrick Blommel of Stevensville Lakeshore today.
