It wasn't until well after the end of his race that James DeWitt learned that he, too, had earned a second-place metal.

The runner-up finishes by the two Buccaneers' seniors highlighted Grand Haven's showing at Saturday's finals at East Kentwood High School.

Grace Kendra also had an outstanding meet for the Buccaneers as the junior reached the finals in both the long jump and the pole vault.

Keefe, who also finished second in the pole vault a year ago, blazed through the early portions of the vault competition. She ran into some trouble at 12 feet, tying her career-best vault on her third try.

She needed to clear 12-3 for a chance at the state title, but missed all three tries and settled for runner-up to East Kentwood's Katie Rancourt, who nailed her vault at 12-3 and also cleared 12-6.

Keefe had struggled early in the season but vindicated herself with a great showing on Saturday.

"It felt so good to finally be back where I was last year," Keefe said. "I felt like I was so close at those last couple tries (at 12-3).

"It's a little sad because this is the last time I'll be wearing the blue and gold."
